what are you good in?

One bright afternoon, an intellectual man want to enjoy the sea, so he hired a fisherman at the coast and his boat. After agreed with the cost, they went not far from the beach.

Melihat nelayan terus bekerja keras mendayung perahu tanpa banyak bicara, sang cendekiawan bertanya: “Apa bapak pernah belajar ilmu fisika tentang energi angin dan matahari?”
“Tidak” jawab nelayan itu singkat.
Cendekiawan melanjutkan ” Ah, jika demikian bapak telah kehilangan seperempat peluang kehidupan Bapak”
Nelayan cuma mengangguk-angguk membisu.
When the intellectual man saw the fisherman not talked to much, he asked: “Did you ever learn physic science about the wind and the sun?”
“No,” said the fisherman.
He added, “Ah, then you have lost your quarter chance of living, sir.”
The fisherman nodded.

“Apa bapak pernah belajar sejarah filsafat?” tanya cendikiawan.
“Belum pernah” jawab nelayan itu singkat sambil menggeleng-gelengkan kepalanya.
Cendekiawan melanjutkan ” Ah, jika demikian bapak telah kehilangan seperempat lagi peluang kehidupan Bapak”. Si Nelayan kembali cuma mengangguk-angguk membisu.
“Did you ever learn about the history of philosophy?” he asked again.
“Never,” said the fisherman.
“Ah, then you have lost your another quarter of chance for living, sir.”
The fisherman nod again.

“Apa bapak pernah belajar dan bisa berkomunikasi dengan bahasa asing?” tanya cendikiawan.
“Tidak bisa” jawab nelayan itu singkat.
“Aduh, jika demikian bapak total telah kehilangan tigaperempat peluang kehidupan Bapak”
“Did you ever learn and speak any foreign language?” he asked more.
“I can’t,” the fisherman replied.
“Poor, then you have lost your three-quarters chance for living, sir.”

Tiba-tiba angin kencang bertiup keras dari tengah laut. Perahu yang mereka tumpangi pun oleng hampir terguling. Dengan tenang Nelayan bertanya kepada cendekiawan. ” Apa bapak pernah belajar berenang?”
Dengan suara gemetar dan muka pucat ketakutan, orang itu menjawab “Tidak pernah”
Nelayanpun memberi komentar dengan percaya diri “Ah, jika demikian, bapak telah kehilangan semua peluang hidup bapak.”
Suddenly, strong winds blowing from the sea and made the boat almost rolled. With calm, the fisherman asked the intellectual man: “Did you ever learn how to swim?”
The intellectual man looked pale and his voice is shaking while he answered, “Never.”
Then the fisherman said with a confidence, “Ah, then, you have lost all your chance for living sir.”

When I read this, I smiled even laughed. A simple story but did give me a thought.

“Never underestimated others. We all have maybe different chances, different opportunities, different way of life, that make us good in what we have. If we good in singing, maybe others good in dancing or music that if all combined into one show, isn’t it worthy to be watched?”
