be a blessing to others

Once, there’s a professor who invited to a military base. When he arrived at the airport, a young soldier picked him up and on duty to served him during his visit there.

After met and introduced themselves one another, they went to take professor luggage. Along the way, the soldier was often disappeared. Many things were done spontaneously. He helped an old woman with her open suitcase. He rose two small children so they could saw the attraction that was held on certain days at the airport. He also helped people who lost by showing the right direction. Each time he returned to the professor’s side he looked satisfied, with a big smile on him.

“Anak muda, bapak sungguh terkesan dengan kebaikan hatimu. Darimana kamu belajar melakukan hal-hal seperti itu?” tanya sang profesor penasaran menyaksikan ulah lincah si prajurit.
“Young man, I really impressed with your kindness. Where did you learn to do things like that?” The professor was curious to watch the soldiers act swiftly.

“Melakukan apa, Prof?” tanya si prajurit.
“Do what, professor?” asked the soldier.

“Begitu sibuk memperhatikan dan menolong orang lain. Darimana Anda belajar untuk hidup seperti itu?”
“You were so busy watching and helping others. Where did you learn to live like that? “

“Oohh, selama masa perang saya kira,” jawab si prajurit sambil tiba-tiba mengerutkan kening, seakan mengingat banyak kejadian buruk di masa perang.
“Oh, during the war time I guess,” the soldier answered and frowned, as he remembered that time.

Then he told the professor about his duty during the war. At the time, he was assigned to clear minefields. He saw his friends, one by one, died in mine explosions and he did nothing. It was a pain and grief that he can not be received over the years.

“I learned to live among footing every step,” he said in a choked voice. “I never know whether the next step is the last foothold, so I learned to do everything I can do when lifting and footing my feet. Every step of my swing was a gamble between life and death, and I guess I live through life like this since that time. I want to benefit as much as I can to anyone as long as I’m alive. Because I still feel so many things I want to do and so little that I have did. While, learned from experiences, there’s so little time and opportunities available and remain.”
