love is a light

The bus passengers looked sympathy to a young woman whom good looking with her white stick. She up the stairs carefully.

Dia membayar sopir bus lalu, dengan tangan meraba-raba kursi, dia berjalan menyusuri lorong sampai menemukan kursi yang tadi dikatakan kosong oleh si sopir.
She paid the bus driver, then groped chairs. She walked down the hallway to find an empty chair as  by the driver said.

Then she sat down, putted her bag on her lap, and leaned her stick to her legs.

A year has passed as Susan became blind because of wrong diagnose. She lost her sight and lived in the dark world that full of anger, frustrating, and felt pity to herself.

As an independent woman, Susan felt that she has been cursed by the fate which made her lost her ability, felt helpless, and became a burden to people surround her.

“How can it happen to me?” she asked, her heart knotted with anger. But,  no matter how much she cried or grumbled or prayed, she understood the fact that she could never be healed.

Depression broke her optimistic. Spending time everyday was a big struggle for her. It’s draining and made her frustration.

Dia menjadi sangat bergantung pada Mark, suaminya. Mark seorang perwira Angkatan Udara. Dia mencintai Susan dengan tulus.
She was highly dependent on Mark, her husband. Mark was an air force officer. He truthful loved Susan.

When he saw his wife in desperation, he decided to help her found strength and confidence as needed to become an independent woman again.

His background made him capable to face any emergency situation, but he knew, this was a hard battle he ever had.

Akhirnya Susan merasa siap bekerja lagi. Tetapi, bagaimana dia akan bisa ke kantornya? Dulu Susan biasa naik bus, tetapi sekarang terlalu takut untuk pergi ke kota sendirian.
Finally, Susan felt ready to worked again. But, how can she went to her office? She usually took bus, but now she too scared to go to city by herself.

Mark menawarkan untuk mengantarkannya setiap hari, meskipun tempat kerja mereka terletak dipinggir kota yang berseberangan.
Mark offered help. He accompanied Susan, even their office were at the opposite edge of town.

At the begining, this decision made Susan comfortabled and Mark satisfied that he could protect his wife whom did not sure she could do even a simple thing. But then, Mark realized that it was mistaken, made them in a rushed, and too expensive.

Susan masih sangat rapuh, masih sangat marah. Bagaimana reaksinya nanti?
Susan must learned how to use bus again, he thought. But, he felt uncomfortable with his thought. Susan still weak, cannot control his emotion. How she would react?

Persis seperti dugaan Mark, Susan ngeri mendengar gagasan untuk naik bus lagi. “Aku buta!” tukasnya dengan pahit. “Bagaimana aku bisa tahu kemana aku pergi? Aku merasa kau akan meninggalkanku”
As what he thought, Susan shocked with that idea. “I am blind!” she said. “How am I supposed to know where I’m going? I thought you would leave me.”

Mark so sad to hear that, but he knew what he should do. He promised that every morning and afternoon, he would took the bus with Susan as many as she need it, till she could did herself.

And that’s what happened. For 2 weeks, Mark with his uniform guarded Susan to and from her office everyday.

He helped Susan to use her sense of hearing to know where she was and how to adapt with a new environment.

He introduced Susan to bus drivers, so they could left an empty chair for her.

He made Susan laughed, even it’s not a fun day when she stumbled from bus, or dropped her bag with full of files in bus hallway.

They left together, after that Mark would took bus to his office.

Though this idea was more expensive than before, he believed that it was only a matter of time before Susan was able to do it by herself. He believed on her, a woman who never afraid to face her challenge and never gave up.

Finally, Susan decided that she was able to do it by helself.

Tibalah hari senin.
It was Monday. Susan hugged Mark whom ever being her friend in a bus and a best one. She so thankful for Mark’s loyalty, patience and love. Then, she said good bye. For the first time the took different way.

Senin, Selasa, Rabu, Kamis … Setiap hari dijalaninya dengan sempurna. Belum pernah Susan merasa sepuas itu. Dia berhasil ! Dia mampu berangkat kerja tanpa dikawal.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday… Everyday was so perfect. She never been satisfied as that. She made it.

On Friday morning, like usual she took a bus to her office. When she paid, the bus driver said: “I’m jealous at you.” Susan did not sure if he speak to her or not. Besides, who would jealous to a blind woman.

Curiously, she asked: “Why you said that?” He replied, “You must be so happy being guard as that.”

Susan tidak mengerti apa maksud sopir itu. Sekali lagi dia bertanya.”Apa maksudmu?”
She did not understand what he said. Once more he asked, What do you mean?” The bus driver said, “Last week, there’s a handsome man with his air force uniform stood in the corner and watched you off the bus. He made sure that you crossed the street well till you got in the office. After that, he blowing a kiss, gave you a military-style salute, then he went away. You are a lucky one.”

Air mata bahagia membasahi pipi Susan.
She cried happily. She felt lucky, very lucky, because Mark gave her a gift that much more worth than a sight. A gift that she did not need to see with her eyes to believe, a love that could be a light where the darkness be.
